Modern Family Stars Stuck In Elevator

It was a Friday night to remember for a few members of the Modern Family cast – they spent an hour of it trapped in an elevator.

Eric Stonestreet, Julie Bowen and Jesse Tyler Ferguson were on their way to headline a fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City – Stonestreet's hometown – when the elevator at the Sheraton Kansas City Hotel at Crown Center stopped.

"Stuck in an elevator for 35 mins," Ferguson Tweeted, sharing a video of the crowd of 15 asking firemen to "Get us out!"

Rescuers worked their way from the 40th floor down to the third to free everyone, the Kansas City Star reports.

"After a quick hour trapped in the service elevator, we were rescued," Bowen Tweeted.

"That's my mom in blue," Stonestreet writes, sharing the above photo before joking, "I honestly handled being stuck in an elevator better than I thought. All Jesse did was pass wind."

The trio finally hit the stage at about 10 p.m. and closed with the line, "Have a great night – don't use the elevators!"

Bonnie Franklin Dies at 69

Breaking News

Originally published 03/01/2013 at 01:35 PM EST

One Day at a Time star Bonnie Franklin, who announced last September that she was suffering from pancreatic cancer, died of complications of the disease on Friday, her family told the Los Angeles Times. She was 69.

Franklin died at her Los Angeles home, and is survived by her mother, Claire Franklin, and stepchildren Jed Minoff and Julie Minoff, said the paper.

On the long-running CBS series, which was developed by Norman Lear and on the air from 1975-1984, Franklin starred as divorced mom Ann Romano, alongside Mackenzie Phillips and Valerie Bertinelli, who played her teenage daughters.

Franklin and Bertinelli reunited on the small screen in 2011 when the Franklin played the mother of Bertinelli's character's boyfriend on Hot in Cleveland.

When Franklin's disease was first revealed, Phillips Tweeted, "Sending out love and sweet prayers to my 'mom.' The incomparable Bonnie Franklin."

A California native, Franklin was born in the beach city of Santa Monica but moved to Beverly Hills as a teen. Her father was a Russian-born investment banker, and her mother was born in Romania – and they remained her most ardent fans. She attended Smith College in Massachusetts and then transferred to UCLA.

Acting since childhood, Franklin first appeared on TV at the age of 3 (reciting Shakespeare) and in movies – including Alfred Hitchcock's The Wrong Man, starring Henry Fonda. In 1970 she sang the title song in the Tony-winning Lauren Bacall Broadway musical Applause. Franklin played a sunny chorus gypsy, and stopped the show twice.

From 1967 to 1970 she was married to the playwright Ronald Sossi, and then from 1980 until his death in 2009, to producer Marvin Minoff. Speaking to The New York Times about their marriage in 1980, Franklin said that she had promised Minoff that their years together would be many things, "but I promised him they weren't going to be boring."

Natalie and Derrica Wilson Help Find the Missing

Heroes Among Us

Natalie Wilson (left) and Derrica Wilson

One spring day in 2004 a young African-American woman named Tamika Huston vanished from her Spartanburg, S.C., apartment.

Her family did everything they could to get the media to pay attention to the 24-year-old's disappearance, sending out emails, calling newspapers and TV stations – to no avail.

"It was painful watching them struggle for any kind of media coverage-local or national," says Derrica Wilson, who was born and raised in Spartanburg. "This could have been one of my family members."

One year almost to the day later, high school senior Natalee Holloway disappeared in Aruba. And that story, of course, was everywhere. "It made me angry but angry in a positive way," says Derrica. "I wanted to do something to help families like Tamika's."

So she turned to her own family to make that happen. In 2008, Derrica and her sister-in-law, Natalie Wilson, started the Black and Missing Foundation, a non-profit geared toward helping minority families find missing loved ones. By working closely with police, the media and the families themselves, they have helped locate more than 113 missing people – 71 of them alive.

It's a daunting task: Thousands of African-Americans go missing each year (one-third of all missing-persons cases). The problem has caught Hollywood's eye: Tyler Perry recently offered a $100,000 reward for tips leading to the discovery of two missing Florida men.

The Wilsons fund the foundation out of their own pockets and make themselves available day and night to grieving families – even though they both have full-time jobs and families of their own. "Let's just say it's a calling," says Derrica, 34. They have more than 2,000 cases in their database (they only take on cases in which police reports were filed).

"I believe in what they do," says Washington, D.C. assistant police chief Diane Groomes, who was so impressed with their work she joined their board of directors.

The sisters in law divvy up their duties based on what they do best. Derrica, a cop for years who currently works as an investigator for a D.C. agency, coaches families on how to deal with law enforcement and the media. Natalie, 43, a public relations expert, works on getting the cases coverage on radio, newspapers, the web and television.

They've also partnered with TV One and national radio host Michael Baisden to get ongoing coverage of different cases. "It's one of the most fulfilling experiences I've ever had," says Baisden, whose show has helped find 14 children. "There is nothing more traumatizing than losing your child and not knowing if they are alive or dead."

On Feb. 13, the sisters-in-law started a support group for families that meets weekly in Washington, D.C. "Coping with a missing loved one is traumatic and overwhelming," says Natalie. "We want families to know that they are not alone." On May 25, they will host a 5K run in Ft. Washington, Md. to raise awareness of the issue.

No one is more appreciative of these efforts than the families they are helping. "If I had the next hundred years I couldn't thank them enough," says Unique Harris, 45, who says Derrica and Natalie got the Washington, D.C. media to give some much-needed attention to the still-unsolved disappearance of her daughter Valencia, 24.

"When I talk to Natalie and Derrica I let them know I love them, "she says, "and they're like family now."

Kristen Bell Shows Off Her Growing, Bare Baby Bump

02/27/2013 at 02:25 PM EST

Kristen Bell isn't bashful when it comes to her belly!

The pregnant, pint-sized House of Lies star, 32, was photographed in L.A., exposing her bare, growing baby bump in public on Tuesday afternoon, as a friend took a snapshot.

It appeared to be a whole photo shoot for the actress and her pals, as a series of shots show her in different poses, with different looks on her face.

Bell's rep confirmed in November that she and her fiancé, Dax Shepard, 38, are expecting their first child.

"I feel like when I arrive at the hospital, I want a glass of whiskey, I want the epidural in my back," Bell has said of giving birth. She's due in late spring.

"And I want to get hit in the face with a baseball bat and wake me up when it's over, because I've seen the videos and it looks terrifying."

Mindy McCready Is Laid to Rest in Florida

Originally published 02/26/2013 at 02:20 PM EST

Nine days after troubled country singer Mindy McCready died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at her lakefront home in Heber Springs, Ark., her family held her funeral in her hometown of Ft. Myers, Fla.

About 400 mourners filled the sanctuary of Crossroads Baptist Church. A white hearse, escorted by two police cars, delivered the singer's wooden casket to the service.

A large portrait of McCready graced the stage, and her casket was adorned with white roses. As McCready's songs were played, photos from her life were displayed on two large video screens on either side of the sanctuary.

The pictures included a glamorous shot of her and her onetime fiancé Dean Cain. Among the songs were "I'm Still Here" and "Ten Thousand Angels."

Attendees, besides being greeted with a handshake form McCready's mother, Gayle Inge, were presented with a program that included a color photo of McCready.

Through tears during the service, Inge told the mourners. "Mindy adored her two children. She wanted them to know that. Through much agony and pain, she went to heaven. She is no longer sick. She is healed. Thank you for all who are here. Please pray for those boys. No matter what, she will always be my little girl, sitting in her car seat, singing into a hairbrush. The world was her stage."

Stepfather Michael Inge played his guitar and sang Bobby Helms's "You Are My Special Angel." Pallbearers included McCready's three brothers – Timothy, Joshua and Skyler – along with some of her cousins.

Gayle Inge, who arranged what was called "A Celebration of Life," told PEOPLE in a statement: "Our family is devastated by the loss of our beautiful and talented daughter. Her life, no matter how brief, touched many, and she will forever be our special angel."

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Mindy McCready Children's Trust, c/o John Ammons, Edison National Bank, 13000 S. Cleveland Ave., Ft. Myers, FL 33907.

McCready, who was 37, will be buried in Ft. Myers. A second memorial service for her professional colleagues to attend is to take place in Nashville in early March.

It was a great night for music at the Academy Awards on Sunday – particularly for the ladies.

But who really knocked it out of the park?

Jennifer Hudson's performance of "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" brought the audience to its feet, while Barbra Streisand delivered a wonderful tribute to Marvin Hamlisch with her rendition of "The Way We Were."

Then there were the Bond girls.

Dame Shirley Bassey wowed the crowd with the James Bond classic "Goldfinger." Then Adele sang "Skyfall," which earned her the Oscar for best song this year.

Closing out the evening was Kristin Chenoweth, who got the better of Seth MacFarlane in a salute to the evening's losers.

Spring may be around the corner, but for many, it's still mighty cold outside.

So cookbook author and Cooking Channel host Ellie Krieger is sharing this warming winter soup with PEOPLE. "This bowl of goodness is satisfying and simple to make," she tells PEOPLE.

An updated version of Ellie Krieger's book Small Changes, Big Results is in stores now.

Butternut Squash Soup
Serves 4

• 1 tbsp. olive oil

• 1 medium onion, chopped

• 2 cloves garlic, minced

• ¼ tsp. ground allspice

• ¼ tsp. ground ginger

• 4 cups cubed butternut or other winter squash, fresh or frozen

• 4 cups low-sodium chicken broth or vegetable broth
• ¾ tsp. salt
• 1 tbsp. maple syrup
• 4 tsp. plain low-fat yogurt for garnish (optional)

1. Heat the oil over medium heat in a 6-quart stockpot. Add the onion and cook until soft but not brown, about 6 minutes. Add the garlic, allspice and ginger, and cook, stirring frequently, for 1 minute more.

2. Add the squash, broth and salt, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer until squash is tender and the broth is slightly reduced, about 15 minutes for fresh squash and 5 minutes for frozen. Remove from heat and stir in maple syrup. Allow soup to cool slightly, then puree in a blender until smooth.

Diane Lane Signed Divorce Papers from Josh Brolin on Valentine's Day

There were likely no flowers or candy exchanged on Feb. 14 between Josh Brolin and soon-to-be ex-wife Diane Lane.

Lane signed her divorce documents on Valentines's Day, documents filed in Los Angeles Superior Court reveal. Lane also cited Feb. 13 as the date of their official separation, although a source tells PEOPLE it was earlier than that.

"They've been separated for several months. This was a hard decision for both of them to make," says a source close to the couple of their split. "The relationship just ran its course."

The pair, who married in a 2004 ceremony at Brolin's central California ranch, were first introduced by the actor's stepmother, Barbra Streisand, at a party in 2002.

Brolin, 45, was recently arrested and held for public intoxication just before midnight on New Year's Eve 2013, but he was released without charge.

After eight years of marriage, Josh Brolin and Diane Lane are splitting, their reps confirm to PEOPLE.

The pair, who married in a 2004 ceremony at Brolin's central California ranch, were first introduced by the actor's stepmother, Barbra Streisand, at a party in 2002.

But just four months after saying "I do," Brolin, 45, was arrested for spousal battery, following "a misunderstanding at [the couple's] home," his rep said at the time. Lane, 48, did not press charges.

Brolin was more recently arrested for public intoxication just before midnight on New Year's Eve 2013.

Spotted without his wedding ring the following day, Brolin, donning sunglasses, seemed unfazed by the trouble as he ate with a male friend at Sauce on Hampton in Venice, Calif.

A few days later, Lane headed to the Palm Springs Film Festival – without her husband – where she presented an award to her former Unfaithful costar, Richard Gere.

Brolin was previously married to Alice Adair, with whom he had two children. Lane previously wed Christopher Lambert, and they had one child together.

Amy Poehler Is the Latest Star to Get Bangs - Who Should Be Next?

Style News Now

BangsLandov, AKM-GSI, BEImages, Wireimage

We’ve filled out our Oscar ballots and predicted the gowns, now the PEOPLE StyleWatch team is ready to talk hair.

Bold bangs are sizzling hot in Hollywood right now: Amy Poehler’s just the latest star to step out with fringe, which is why we’re hoping for a big bang debut at the Oscars. Now we just have to decide who will follow in the footsteps of Michelle Obama, LeAnn Rimes and Poehler, all who have gotten sassy chops in the last month. Here are our front runners:

Amanda Seyfried: The actress has had these long, layered golden locks since her Mean Girls days, so we’re ready for her to spice it up a bit. Seyfried, call your stylist and request some side-swept bangs. They’re flattering, flirty and not-too-frightening for a first-timer … and let’s be honest, you wouldn’t mind stealing some of that Les Mis spotlight from Anne Hathaway come Sunday night.

Jessica Chastain: Chastain already gives us major mane envy, which is why the star is a prime candidate for a blunt bangs cut à la Jessica Biel. Just think how chic she’d look if she wore her tresses straight with serious statement stunners — and since she’s been sporting dramatic hairstyles throughout awards season, we bet she’d dare to try something similar at the Oscars.

Bradley Cooper: Given that he’s one of the sexiest men alive, we’re not telling him to change much, but a little cleanup to his already face-framing locks could do wonders for Cooper‘s floppy hairdo.

Who do you think should try bangs at the Oscars? Vote below and sound off in the comments!

Jerry Buss, Lakers Owner, Dies at 80

02/18/2013 at 02:10 PM EST

Jerry Buss, the owner of the Los Angeles Lakers, has died, the Associated Press reports. He was 80.

Buss had been hospitalized for cancer, but died of kidney failure at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles on Monday, said his assistant, Bob Steiner.

Paying $67.5 million when he first bought the the Lakers from Jack Kent Cooke (in a deal that also included the N.H.L.'s L.A. Kings, the L.A. Forum sports arena and Cooke’s California ranch), Buss saw their value increase to $1 billion, according to a Forbes ranking in January, reports The New York Times. That made the team second in the N.B.A. to the New York Knicks’ $1.1 billion valuation.

During his 32 years with the Lakers, Buss's team made the N.B.A finals 16 times (through 2011), winning 10 titles between 1980 and 2010.

At just 24, Buss earned a Ph.D. in chemistry and later had careers in aerospace and real estate development.

Buss is survived by his six children.

As news of his death traveled, athletes and celebrities took to Twitter to share their condolences.

Stories You Loved: Mariska Hargitay Loves Her Curves from Motherhood

Mariska Hargitay

In another week of tragedy, it was a breath of fresh air to read something lighthearted, like Mariska Hargitay's outlook on her body after baby.

Readers loved the reason why the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit star, 49, embraces her curves.

"I love my curves because they scream, 'I'm a mama!' " the actress said. "I'm the girl who started wearing maternity pants about an hour after I found out I was pregnant because I was so excited about becoming a mom."

Curves aside, Hargitay acknowledges that she no longer has the body she had when she was younger, but she's just fine with it.

"Things are sagging a bit – I'm not going to lie," she says. "But am I going to be upset about the sag or am I going to look at my three gorgeous kids and my husband and count my lucky stars? I try to focus on who I am rather than who I'm not."

Vin Diesel Covers Rihanna's 'Stay' - and Wins the Internet for the Day

02/15/2013 at 02:30 PM EST

This video could break the Internet, and there aren't even any cats in it.

On Feb. 14, Vin Diesel posted a video of his heartfelt cover of Rihanna's song "Stay" to his Facebook page – and in a matter of hours, the video was shared more than 26,000 times, because who doesn't want to watch the musclebound Fast & Furious star sing?

In the clip, a shadowed Diesel says, "Happy V day amore," before launching into a karaoke-style rendition of the ballad as the video (where a nude Rihanna sings in the bathtub) is projected on the wall next to him.

The actor, clad in jeans and a jacket, shows off his vocal range, switching from a deep bass to a falsetto.

Diesel, who was named the Sexiest Man Alive on Facebook in 2010 ends the clip by repeating "Happy V day amore" three times and blowing a kiss, presumably to his 39 million Facebook fans.

This Ring Rocks: See Engagement Bling Cobra Starship's Gabe Saporta Gave Erin Fetherston

Style News Now

02/14/2013 at 01:52 PM ET

It’s official: Cobra Starship rocker Gabe Saporta and fashion designer Erin Fetherston are engaged!

Saporta popped the question to his bride-to-be on New Year’s Eve while on vacation in Barbados. “I woke up at dawn to go collect coral and flowers from the beach next to our cottage,” Saporta tells PEOPLE. “I used them to write out my proposal on our patio and then I woke Erin up in a frenzy to come see a ‘monkey’ that had appeared in our backyard. My sleepy-eyed bride quickly realized the only monkey that morning was me … and of course, she said,’Yes!’”

Saporta and Fetherson, who began dating in 2010, say they started seriously discussing marriage this past fall — and she was even involved in designing her ring. But Saporta couldn’t resist pulling a few fake-outs when it came to finally popping the question.

“Since she knew about the ring, surprising her with a proposal was going to prove a challenge,” he says. “My first step was to psych her out. On Christmas Eve, I gave her a nicely wrapped ring-box that did non contain her engagement ring. It contained a sick amethyst cocktail ring instead.”

Fetherston’s actual engagement ring, however, is no joke. Designed by Lorraine Schwartz, it’s an emerald-cut stone set in a pavé basket on a pavé band. “The platinum was oxidized to give the ring a vintage feeling,” says Fetherson. “I love it because it’s luminous and romantic, with the right amount of edge.”

While the couple are still in the planning stages for their big day, Fetherston already has ideas for her dress and ceremony. “I will definitely design my own dress,” she says, “and my fairytale aesthetic will undoubtedly influence the look and feel of the wedding.”

As for Saporta, who is recording a new album with his band, he says, “It’s gonna be a classy shindig.”

Harley Pasternak Blogs: 8 Reasons Why Sex Is Great for Your Health

Celebrity Blog

02/13/2013 at 02:30 PM EST

As Valentine's Day draws near, many of you will be wining, dining and romancing your way into someone's heart. If you're lucky, things will go well, and you may GET lucky! Not only will you have a fun evening of intimacy, but you may live longer for it.

Here are some of the reasons science tells us sex is good for our bodies, inside and out.

1. Sex Relieves Stress

Perhaps the most enjoyable way to blow off some steam, research has shown that people who are sexually active respond better in stressful situations and have lower levels of overall stress. Sex increases our levels of oxytocin, a stress fighting hormone. In a fascinating study of the effect of intercourse on acute stress, researchers found that people who had sex the night before public speaking, had a reduced pulse increase, and far lower blood pressure than those who had not. Which brings me to No. 2 ...

2. Sex Is Good for Your Heart – in More Ways Than One

Over the years, there have been a number of studies shown that sex is good for cardiovascular health. Again and again, it's been linked to increased circulation, lower cholesterol and lower blood pressure. In 2010, Brazil's minister of health created some serious buzz when he recommended Brazilians have sex five times a week as a countermeasure to the nation's hypertension epidemic. Sex has also been shown to reduce the chance of heart attack, particularly for men. In a recent groundbreaking study published in the American Journal of Cardiology, men who engaged in intercourse at least twice a week were a staggering 45% less likely to suffer a heart attack than those who had sex once a month or less.

3. Sex Helps You Lose Weight

Sexual activity is exactly that – activity. Thirty minutes of sex burns 200 calories or a pound of body fat for every 17.5 times you have sex.

4. Sex Helps You Sleep

The oxytocin released during sex leads to pronounced relaxation and sounder sleep. If you've read my previous blog on the myriad benefits of a good night's sleep, you'll know that better sleep lends itself to reduced body weight, lower stress, increased immunity and overall well-being.

5. Sex Is a Great Pain Reliever

I know that sex might be one of the very last things on your mind when you're suffering with a migraine, menstrual cramps, or chronic pain, but consider this: sex has been repeatedly linked to alleviating pain, especially in these instances. There's a distinct relationship between the endorphins, corticosteroids and, yes, oxytocin released during sexual intercourse and pain relief. So next time the ibuprofen or aspirin just isn't cutting it, consider sex as an alternative therapy!

6. Sex Boosts Your Immune System

Amid this record-breaking flu season, I'm sure I got your attention with this surprising fact! Yes, sex wards off colds, flu, and other infections by increasing the levels of the antibody immunoglobulin A (IgA). It makes sense, then, that sexually active people take fewer sick days than those who abstain.

7. Sex Can Improve Your Relationship

I'm not just talking about your "sex life" when I say that sex can improve your relationship with your significant other. While the obvious is true that you are experiencing mutual pleasure, the benefits go way beyond that.

Let's come back to good old oxytocin. Oxytocin has been called a "love potion" by many for promoting feelings of intimacy and closeness, but it may also prevent arguments from spiraling out of control. Researchers in Zurich found that sex reduces Cortisol and increases oxytocin, which encourages positive communication and provides a one-two punch against a stressful situation like an argument. Not only that, but fascinating recent research published in The Journal of Neuroscience found that, when given oxytocin, men in committed relationships chose to keep a greater distance between themselves and an unknown woman they find attractive. These findings suggest oxytocin may play a pivotal role in promoting fidelity within monogamous relationships.

8. Sex Improves Your Appearance

Many people focus on looking good in the sack, but did you know the sack can return the favor? Having sex just twice a week increases the hormone DHEA which research suggests can repair tissues, improve skin tone, and even stimulate natural collagen production to fight wrinkles and visible again.

7-year-old Alana Thompson – better known as the star of Here Comes Honey Boo Boo – brought her outsized attitude to one of the year's most over-the-top celebrations: Mardi Gras.

Alana and Mama June – who recently dropped over 100 lbs. – attended a family-friendly version of the festivities at Universal Orlando on Feb. 9.

"We had a BLAST today!!!" Mama June, 32, wrote on Facebook after catching beads at the Mardi Gras parade alongside Alana and daughters Lauryn, 13, and Jessica, 16.

Go Inside the Grammy Pre-Parties - and See How the Stars Celebrated

02/10/2013 at 02:30 PM EST

While the northeast braved a midwinter blizzard, the West Coast was feeling the heat – and we're not just talking about the comparatively warmer weather.

With the Grammy Awards on the horizon, the most famous faces of the industry were in their finest form Saturday to celebrate music's biggest night.

John Mayer and Katy Perry took their date night up a notch at Clive Davis and The Recording Academy's Annual Pre-Grammy Gala at the Beverly Hilton hotel, where they were spotted holding hands while Patti Smith performed. The couple was color-coordinated: he was in a white dinner jacket and black bow tie, and she wore a white designer dress.

While they were happy to take in the performances, Davis, at one point, called out Mayer, telling the crowd, "I read the papers and I see who you've been spending time with," before acknowledging Perry beside him in the audience.

Meanwhile, the party – which honored Epic Records's chairman and CEO Antonio "L.A." Reid, who received the 2013 Grammy Salute To Industry Icons Award – was a photo shoot for Miley Cyrus and Tyra Banks, who were spotted smizing for their own personal cameras. (Even Jennifer Hudson couldn't resist going for her close-up with the supermodel!)

But those weren't the only stars at the soiree.

PEOPLE was there, and documented the whole evening on Instagram and Twitter. Plus, take a peek inside PEOPLE's own party (which coincided with Davis's bash) and featured Grammy nominee Carly Rae Jepsen.
